Reflections

This page contains three "Reflections" from World
War II.
The first is a prayer written by Chaplain John Eastman, Captain,
U.S. Army Corps of the 464th Bomb Group stationed at the Pantanella Air Base,
Italy. He also published the air base newspapers, copies of which can be read
at the 464ths' web site -
464bg.com.
The second example is a "Prayer Card" published
with the approval of the Hungarian Catholic Church from World War II. The card
was to be carried in your pocket to the bomb shelter and read before a bombing
raid.
The third reflection is a poem by Miklós Radnóti
titled "Nem Tudhatom" (I Can Not Know), Jan. 17, 1944.
Radnóti was held in a German Labor Camp near Bor, Yugoslavia. He later
died on a forced march through Hungary near Abda. Radnóti was buried in
a mass grave with twenty-one interees. In November 1945, after the war, his
remains were exhumed, and a collection of his last works were found in his trench
coat pocket. These poems were published as "Tajtékos Ég"
(Threatening Sky) in 1946.

A következő elmélkedések a
második világháború idejéből származnak.
Az első imát John Eastman tábori lelkész írta,
aki századosként szolgált az Amerikai Légierők
464-es számú bombázó csoportjában, amely az
Olaszország-i Pantanella légi bázison állomásozott.
Ugyancsak ő szerkesztette a bázis hírlapjait, amelyek megtalálhatók
a 464-es bombázó csoport honlapján a
http://464bg.com.
A második imát a magyar katolikus egyház
jóváhagyásával bocsátották ki a második
világháború folyamán. Az ima célja lelki támasz
nyujtása volt a bombatámadások idején.
A harmadik elmélkedés Radnóti Miklós:
Nem tudhatom cimű verse, amelyet 1944 január 17- én tett
közzé. A költő egy német munkatáborban
sinylődött a jugoszláviai Bor közelében, s
később egy Magyarországon átvezető erőltetett
menet áldozata lett Abda községben. Tömegsírba
temették huszonegy fogolytársával együtt. 1945 novemberében
megtalálták földi maradványait, és vele együtt
kabátja zsebében az utolsó verseit. Ezt a vers gyüjteményt
aztán 1946-ban kiadták Tajtékos ég cimen.
